Clinical observation of sudden sensorineural hearing loss

Abstract
Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss is defined as a perceptive hearing impairment which developes over a period of hours or a few days without definitive cause.
To evaluate indidence and prognostic factor, the authors analyzed 41 patients (50 ears) admitted in Chonnam National University Hospital from March 1986 to July 1991.
@ES The results were as follows.
@EN 1. The sex was 1.9 male (46.34%) and 22 female (53.66%), and the age of 40% of the patients were between the 3rd and 4th decade. In the affected side, the right ear was involved in 15 patient(36.59%), the left in 17 patients(41.46%), and
bilateral
in 9 patients (21.95%).
2. Recovery was complete in 10 patients(20%), partial in 11 patients(22%), and 15 patients (30%) had slight improvement, but 14 patients(28%) had no improvement.
3. Evaluation of prognosis.
1) Prognosis was poor in two cases with diabetes.
2) Patients treated within two weeks after onset revealed better prognosis.
3) In evaluation by audiogram, flat and ascending type had a better recovery, but profound sensory loss type had a poor recovery.
4) Patients with mild hearing loss showed better recovery than those with profound loss.
5) Patients with vertigo showed poor recovery, but patients with tinnitus could not be related to prognosis.
